Lewiston woman, 25, charged with murder in early morning shooting

LEWISTON, Maine - A Lewiston woman has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of another woman early Friday morning.

Lewiston Police got involved in the incident around 1:25 a.m. Friday morning after the Lewiston-Auburn Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a shooting on Union Street in Lewiston.

Lewiston and State Police responded to the scene and upon arrival found a female suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim, identified as 22-year-old Maliyah Powell of Lewiston, was transported to Central Maine Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries, according to a press release sent Friday evening.

The deceased was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where an autopsy was performed and found the cause of death was a gunshot wound.

Detectives from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South, along with Evidence Response Technicians, processed the scene throughout the morning, and as a result of the investigation 25-year-old Elise Bergeron of Lewiston was arrested and charged with murder. She was transported to the Androscoggin County Jail.
