ALFRED, Maine - A West Lebanon man faces felony burglary charges after Maine State Police say he broke into a Lebanon residence in March.

Thaddeus W. Barbour, 37, of Prospect Hill Road (no number given), was picked up by Milton Police on March 24 after Maine lawmen put out a warrant for his arrest in New Hampshire in connection with a March 19 burglary in Lebanon.

Maine State Trooper James Macdonald said an investigation revealed that Barbour may have broken into the residence after he was denied money by the homeowner, adding that Barbour was suspected of having solicited money from several area residents.

Macdonald said police suspect Barbour may have gone back and burglarized the homes of several residents who refused his money request and are looking into other possible burglaries he may be connected to.

Macdonald would not release the name of the street on which the burglary occurred.

"This is an open case, and I can't release many details," Macdonald said today, adding that Barbour has been uncooperative in the investigation.

Barbour had his initial court hearing in York County Superior Court on April 1, and bail was set, although the bail amount was not immediately available.

He remains at York County Jail, while a status conference hearing is set for July 17.

A Class B felony conviction could result in a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

Barbour is well known in the area of Prospect Hill Road and Champion Street, especially for his efforts to keep the small waterfront park at the bottom of the hill tidy during the summer months.
