SOUTH LEBANON - More and more women are buying guns for self-defense, so this weekend's gun show at the Tri-State Expo Center in South Lebanon should be a great draw for them, said organizer Carey Halkiotis.

The Sportsmen's Gun and Knife Show will feature a wide variety of firearms, including shotguns, rifles and handguns as well as historical and collectible pieces.

A recent study from last September done at Harvard and Northeastern universities showed that women were more likely to buy a gun for protections and that more than 40 percent of individuals who own just a handgun are women.

That's where a company called Damsel in Defense comes in. It's run by a woman and specializes in introducing women to the use of handguns and teaches them how to shoot, Halkiotis said.

The expo will also have high-end fishing and hunting equipment, plenty of blades and historic guns dating back to the revolution.

About a half dozen crafter tables will also be on hand.

"It will be a very educational event," Halkiotis noted. "People can come down and have a gun appraised by experts, or if they want to learn about a gun they have in the family, we'll have experts that can do that."

The show will have new guns for sale, but mostly it's about buying a used gun or trading antique or collectible items, Halkiotis added.

"The theme of this show is variety," he said.

Included in the mix are archery items, tactical and optical gear, ammo and outdoors equipment.

There will also be a lunch counter.

The gun show is located at the Tri State Expo Center at 1545 Carl Broggi Hwy. (Route 202-about a half mile east of East Rochester) and goes from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets are $7 at the door or $6 online at safaripromotions.com.
