GONIC - Two Barrington women were injured on Thursday night, one severely, when the vehicle they were riding in crashed into a guardrail on Route 125, crossed to the opposite side and overturned as it careened down an embankment and into trees.

Deana Spencer, 42, of Barrington, who was the passenger, was thrown from the vehicle. She was transported by Frisbie Paramedics to Skyhaven Airport where she was flown to Maine Medical Center by DART with what were described as serious, but nonlife-threatening injuries.

Shauntelle Fitts, 25, the driver, was transported to Frisbie Memorial Hospital with what were described as nonlife-threatening injuries.

A 2003 Dodge Caravan suffered extensive damage and was towed from the scene.

Police say when they arrived at the scene around 11:45 p.m. preliminary investigation revealed that the Dodge was traveling south on Gonic Road in the area of Rochester Country Club when the vehicle struck the guardrail, crossed over into the opposite lane of travel, went down the embankment, rolled over and struck a tree. The vehicle was discovered resting on the driver's side with the roof against a tree.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation at this time, however neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors, according to police. Neither Fitts nor Spencer appeared to be wearing their seat belts. The speed limit along the area of roadway is 50 mph.
