They lie in faraway graves, c'mon, buy a mattress

Time speeds up as you get older and it also speeds up in the summer so when you're older and it's summertime, well, it goes fast.

Holiday weekends are the worst, they go by like a category IV tornado.

And so it was this past Memorial Day. What with covering the stories of our honored veterans or covering the parades and Memorial Day exercises, well, there wasn't much time for reflection on the events, only the reporting.

Well, trust me, today is just as busy as ever, but let's grab a couple of minutes to reflect on what was and what should never be again.

Say you're a veteran of a foreign war, and you get up on Memorial Day to see how the country is honoring your fellow servicemen who died in battle, many on foreign shores in faraway lands fighting to keep us free.

So you turn on the TV and there it is: A MAMMOTH, BLOWOUT, THREE-DAY MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND MATTRESS SALE!

So I guess the message is to remember the thousands of servicemen who lie at rest for eternity in graves halfway round the world: Go out and buy a new mattress so you don't wake up cranky in the morning.

If this sounds revolting to you I beg, I implore you to call the mattress, car and furniture companies - and anyone else who is culpable - and tell them those hallowed souls didn't sacrifice their lives so corporations could besmirch the sanctity of one of the most solemn of all holidays.

If you ask any veteran what they think about the status of Memorial Day, they'll tell you the same thing: "It's too commercial."

I guess those corporations don't give a rat's ass what the people who keep this country free think.

It may sound crazy, but wouldn't it be wonderful if we, the people, could change this sordid practice of corporate America.

And if the corporations were smart they could get onboard, too. Instead of commercials hyping a weekend sale, they could air 30-second tributes to our military ending with a quiet tagline at the bottom of the screen like, "Brought to you by ----- Corp."

Memorial Day is a time to honor our war dead, not sell a mattress.

If you believe the way I do, please share this. Who knows, maybe we can get it done!
