ROCHESTER - A spectacular crash and rollover that could have been disastrous to nearby construction workers occurred today around 8:45 a.m. near the Wakefield Street triangle at the front of Spaulding High.

When police and EMTs arrived they found a 2012 Kia Optima on its roof in the southbound lane of Wakefield Street.

Witnesses said that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed traveling down Wakefield Street heading into town in the area of the school when it left the roadway and traveled across the grass triangle area.

It then continued about another 50 yards before striking a monument at the tip of the triangle area near the intersection of Wakefield and Yeagley Way.

The vehicle then traveled across Yeagley way and struck a tree on Wakefield Street, rolling onto its roof.

Traffic at that time was mostly stopped for a person on the crosswalk at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Wakefield Street.

The driver of the vehicle, Devon A Mix, 19, of Farmington, N.H., had to be extricated from the vehicle by Rochester Fire. He was transported to Frisbie Hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. A spokesperson at the hospital said Mix was not a patient there late this afternoon.

The vehicle sustained heavy damage as did the monument.

Although the area was heavily congested with construction workers on Yeagley Way and with multiple people in the area walking, no workers or pedestrians were injured.

The accident remains under investigation.
