Shelly Lynn Littlefield was only 15 when she took her own life on Oct. 26, 1998.

The Littlefields lived in Lebanon at the time of the tragedy, which left all concerned devastated and with unspeakable emotional scars.

Now, however, the family is reaching out to others in support of programs that seek to prevent suicide and help families trying to cope with the loss of a family member.

"It has been quite a while since she passed but my mother and father and some other close relatives and friends decided that we wanted to do something in my sister's honor," Amy-Sue Marden told The Lebanon Voice earlier this month.

To that end the family is planning a major fund-raiser for programs that provide suicide prevention awareness and aid survivors on Saturday in Sanford.

A Smiles 4 Shelly Dance is set for 7-11 p.m. at the Elks Hall. Tickets are one for $15, two for $25.

The family feels if more people understand the "signs" of people who are experiencing thoughts of suicide, family members and friends may be able to stop a potential suicide, Marden said.

They have started a "Smiles 4 Shelly" memory quilt and are hoping others will find comfort from adding their own quilt squares.

A special focus of the fund-raiser will be raising money for Camp Kita, which seeks to provide a safe, constant environment for young survivors of suicide.

To get tickets for the dance contact Jimmy at 891-7677.

Money raised from the event will go to Camp Kita and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
