ROCHESTER - Raymond D. Scruton, 89, died Sunday, November 9, 2014, at his home following a period of failing health.

Born July 24, 1925, in Rochester, he was the son of the late John and Esther (Dow) Scruton.

Mr. Scruton served in the Army during World War II. After the war Ray met Ethel and they were married in May of 1947. He later attended Providence Bible Institute and received his BS from the University of New Hampshire. Ray worked for GE in Somersworth for several years and then for Sherwin Williams who transferred him to Springfield, Mass. Later he managed the paint department at Sears for 25 years.

While in Springfield he raised their three children and was very active in his church, serving as a deacon and singing in the choir. Being true to his NH roots he built a cottage at Rumney Bible Conference where he shared many summers and vacations with his family. Following the death of their son and daughter-in-law they raised their grandchildren Todd and Alicia. Soon after he retired the family moved to Rumney where Ray volunteered countless hours of service, including cutting wood, and wherever he could find a need he could fill. Throughout his life Ray enjoyed collecting stamps, and any time he had a minute he would catalog a few.

Members of his family include his wife of 67 years Ethel (Gray) Scruton of Rochester; his children Leon Scruton and wife Diane of Channels Island Beach, Calif.; and Terry Van Ryn and husband Tim of Estes Park, Colo.; seven grandchildren Sean, Christopher, Todd, Alicia, Leah, Erik, and Kelsea, seven great grandchildren Julia, Emma, Becca, Sadie, Charlotte, Nolan and Eliana, one brother Rev. Paul Scruton of Johnstown, Pa.; two sisters Carolyn Ryder of Brookville, Fla.; and Marjorie St. Pierre of Rochester; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son and daughter-in-law Dale and Becky Scruton.
