North Berwick man badly hurt in Lebanon rollover

EAST LEBANON - A North Berwick man was seriously injured when he hit a guard rail and careened down an embankment and into a river alongside Fall Road on Sunday night.

Maine State Police Trooper Mike Lane indicated the man was driving a new Chrysler 200 sedan and was speeding in the area of 32 Fall Road during Sunday's severe rain and hail storm.

The man remains in a critical care unit at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Lane told the Portland Press Herald the Chrysler's speedometer was stuck at 60 mph when it was inspected, some 35 mph over the 25 mph speed limit on the road.

The man, whose name is not being released, is likely to face charges though Lane was not specific on the nature of those charges.

Meanwhile, Lebanon Fire and Rescue boomed an area of the river to prevent fluids leaking from the vehicle to contaminate the water.

Lebanon Fire and Rescue Chief Dan Meehan said the call came in around 8:50 for a vehicle over an embankment and into a river.

Initial reports from dispatch reported three people in the car, so mutual aid was requested but later called off when it was realized the North Berwick man was the sole occupant.

The accident investigation continues by State Police.
