Our dog, Princess, recently came down with what are known as "hot spots," a common ailment among huskies, and other breeds with oily fur well suited to colder climes.

In the summer she often gets them, but this summer I learned a couple of money saving tips.

One, get your prescriptions filled at Walmart or some other department store pharmacy.

Her prednisone was about a third the cost as at the vets, about $5 at Walmart.

Second, we wanted to up her game against fleas and ticks so we inquired as to what was the newest and best remedy. Our veterinarian said they now have new flea and tick collars "that actually work." It's called Seresto and lasts eight months!

Over at Petco at The Ridge, they were kept in a locked glass display case and cost more than $80. When I told the shop clerk our vet had said it was only $40 online, she cheerfully helped us order on the spot for $40, and we got it in our mailbox three business days later.

That's about $50 saved.
