Longtime works chief Pat Smith collects 20-year kudos

MILTON - Milton selectmen on Monday expressed their intentions to determine the best use of the old fire station with an eye to possibly recouping some of the money taxpayers spent on the new one.

"We need to start looking at what we're going to do, whether we're going to sell it, auction it or if we're going to repurpose it," Selectmen Chairman Tom Gray said.

First up will be an appraisal to try to determine what's its market value might be.

The 64-year-old stationhouse is fraught with mold and has been in a deteriorating condition for years with only a temporary occupancy permit that could be pulled at any time.

The Board of Selectmen began their meeting with the awarding of a 20-year plaque to Department of Public Work Chief Pat Smith.

Smith had been summoned to the meeting under the guise of a department heads meeting, but soon found out it was only a ruse to ensure his presence for the brief ceremony.

In other news, selectmen announced their intention to formulate a social media policy for town employees and briefed the public on the status of Milton's proposed acquisition of the Milton Mills cemetery to be used as a town burial ground.

The Planning Board and Conservation Commission have both already signed off on the acquisition paving the way for two required Town Hearings to glean taxpayers' views. Those two hearings have yet to be scheduled.
