ROCHESTER - John J. Calo SFC USA (Ret.), 69, of Rochester, died on May 14, 2014, in Naples, Fla., a place he wanted to be. He fought a courageous six-month battle with lung cancer.

John was born in Lynn, Mass., on Jan. 27, 1945, a son of Guilliomo and Margaret Calo. He spent 20 years in the Army retiring in 1982. He served in Vietnam, Korea and many other places.

John met his wife Joan, while they where stationed together in Belgium. They married Aug. 10, 1978, in Copenhagen, Denmark. They were married for 35 years.

John had three children, Jenifer of Rochester, Scott and his wife Linda of Milford, and Stephanie Brown and her husband Steve of Converse, Texas; he also had 5 grandchildren.

After the Army he joined the United States Postal Service as a rural letter carrier. He spent his 20 years at the Durham Post Office in Durham, N.H.

John loved to golf at least three times a week with his best friend Dale.

John was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an all American State Commander from 2007-2008. He also held many jobs in the VFW. He was a member of the Rochester American Legion Post #7, a life member of Chapter 23 of the Disabled American Veterans of Farmington, a member of Cooties Pup Tent #2 a group of the VFW. Finally he was a member of Human Lodge 21 of the Free and Accepted Masons in Rochester.

John loved to watch the Big Bang Theory. Even when he was near death he had to hear it. He watched it every day.
