ROCHESTER - James "Jim" F. McManus, Jr., 71, died Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at the Frisbie Memorial Hospital. Born July 1, 1945 in Rochester, N.H., he was the son of the late James F. Sr., and Eleanor (Crowe) McManus.
Jim is a lifelong resident of Rochester. He is a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Class of 1965. After high school Jim dedicated a lot of time working with his dad selling apples and woodstoves. In 1972 he began his career in local politics starting out as a campaigner for candidates. In 1974 he began his 27-year tenor as a city councilor in Rochester. He also served in the House of Representatives for a two-year term, police commissioner for a six year term, deputy mayor for a one year term and on the planning board. In 2008 he retired then worked part time at the Strafford County Court House in Dover as a bailiff.
Jim was a very thoughtful and giving man, having supported Roger Allen Baseball Field projects and many Rochester School system programs. Jim owned Rochester Stove Company on Rte. 125 and was known for his fruit and vegetable stand. Jim enjoyed many activities such as spending time with his family, friends and especially his six grandchildren. He also enjoyed working with his brother Henry at his business, McManus Fuels in Barrington. He loved his swimming pool, vegetable garden and reading the newspaper. Even though he was retired he kept up with politics within the city with his friends.
Members of his family include his wife of 44 years, Sharron McManus of Rochester, his daughters; Lori Connelly and her husband Curt of Rochester and Melissa Peterson and her husband Mike of North Carolina, his grandchildren; Gabby Connelly of San Diego, Calif., Isabella Connelly of Rochester, Owen, Sophie, Shelby and Sydney Peterson of North Carolina, his father-in-law Alphonse Talbot of Rochester; his brothers; Charles McManus of Rochester and Henry McManus of Barrington, sister- in- laws, Gail McManus of Rochester, and Elaine Fistere of Barrington, nieces and nephews; Garrett Fistere, Katie and Marlene McManus, Aaron and Nicole Huppe.
He is predeceased by two sister- in-laws, Pat Huppe, Diane McManus; brother-in-law, David Fistere and a nephew Chris McManus, and his mother in-law, Rita Talbot. - See more at:
