ROCHESTER - Harry Jewett, born Rochester, N.H., dies In Hilton Head, S.C.

Harold W. Jewett, a former executive with the Nestlé Corp. who enjoyed a post-retirement career as a successful businessman in upstate New York, died Friday (February 20th) at home in Hilton Head, South Carolina surrounded by his family. Universally known as "Harry", he had been diagnosed with cancer eight months earlier, which he battled with grace and dignity. Mr. Jewett was 72 years old.
Born in Rochester, New Hampshire, Mr. Jewett majored in Chemical Engineering at the University of New Hampshire from which he graduated in 1966. He earned an MBA from Syracuse University in 1974.
Mr. Jewett served eight years in the National Guard.
In the course of his 20 years with Nestlé, Mr. Jewett was plant manager in Burlington, Wisconsin and Fulton, New York. He also served as General Manager of Chocolate Manufacturing in the US, based in White Plains, New York.
After Nestle, Mr. Jewett exercised his entrepreneurial muscles by buying the nine-hole Emerald Crest Golf Course in Palermo, New York and expanding it to an 18-hole operation with his partner, PJ Rutledge.
Shortly after selling Emerald Crest, Mr. Jewett acquired the Jackson Hewitt Tax Service franchise for the area in and around Oswego, New York. Along the way, Mr. Jewett himself became a certified financial planner and won qualification to represent clients before the IRS.
In 2010, after what his family called his "real" retirement, Mr. Jewett took up full-time residence in Hilton Head, where he was able to give free reign to his life-long passions for golf and fishing.
For more than 30 years, Mr. Jewett was a serious deep-water sailor, traversing the Caribbean every winter on rented boats crewed by family and friends.
Mr. Jewett was the son of the late Barbara Robinson O'Brien. He is survived by his stepfather, Richard O'Brien of Springhill Florida; his wife of 49 years, Linda; a daughter, Kelley Jewett Yocum and her husband, Chuck; and two grandchildren, Gabrielle and Charlie - all of Hilton Head.
