ROCHESTER - George Thomas "Tom" Hebert, 80, of Rochester died on Wednesday, February 3, 2016, at Riverside Rest Home in Dover, N.H. In his last days his loving children were at his bedside as he was cared for by the compassionate caregivers at Riverside.
Tom was born and raised in Gonic, N.H., the eldest son of George and Emelia (Lebrun) Hebert. He went to St. Leo School and graduated from Holy Rosary High School. He and his wife of 56 years, Gertrude (Payeur) of Sanford, Maine, were married on September 1, 1956. A committed Catholic, Tom was always active in the church, as an altar boy and organist at St. Leo, later as President of the Parish Council. When he and Gert moved to Rochester they became members of St. Mary Parish where Tom continued to be an active supporter, serving on the building committee and using his wide network of contacts to raise funds for various church projects. Tom was employed throughout his career in sales and management positions in the plumbing and heating industry. Before his retirement he was a district manager with Goulet Supply Company.
Tom was very devoted to his family. He was dearly loved by his children and grandchildren. He invented knicknames, "Clancey, Penuche, Gidget, Tunie, Tête Rouge, Wolfie, Guidsie, Face Laid, Ralphie, Tootsie". He gave advice, told stories and jokes and could always be relied on to help out when a friend or family member needed him. He was outspoken and plain spoken and one of a kind. He had a twinkle in his eye and wicked sense of humor. He spent his last years at the nursing home "raising hell" in the hallways and the activities department. His constant companion at Riverside was Amelia "Midge" Lapanne, whose special friendship brought happiness and laughter to his life.
Tom is survived by his four children, Anne Behre of New Durham, Normand "Bub" Hebert of Strafford, Francine Hebert of East Rochester, and Emily Schwartz Rodenhuis of Strafford, his brother John Hebert of North Haven Connecticut, eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Marc in 2001 and his wife Gert in 2012.
