England swings like a pendulum do, and so does 'Shout'

"Shout A Mod Musical" is a whimsical, light-hearted and delightful romp through the '60s London scene that features music from some of the decade's greatest female vocalists.

Greats like Dusty Springfield, Lulu, Shirley Bassey, Petula Clark and Nancy Sinatra all get their due from five Seacoast divas who have as much fun reprising the songs as you will have watching them.

The show is set in London between the early 1960s and 1970, and follows the lives of five women between the ages of 20 and 40 who send questions about romance to the "Shout" mag's advice columnist.

Rebecca Hios, whom the audience never sees, plays columnist for the lovelorn Gwendolyn Holmes, and while her advice is more often than not a disconnect (Husband's incessantly cheating? Maybe you should try a new hairdo.), it serves as a fulcrum for the five women to expand their minds and their life expectations.

Greg Bell, who narrates the "Shout" news flashes in his wonderfully staccato British accent, whom you also never see, does so impeccably.

But this play belongs to these five "birds" (Brit slang for gals) who between singing beautifully, make quick sport of that wacky decade known as the '60s in "Rowan & Martin Laugh-in"-inspired snippets.

Amanda Dane (do the legs ever stop?), Seraphina Caligiure, Linette Miles, Laura Scherf and Heidi Gagne play the five girls and play them to perfection, actually reprising the same show they all did at ROH five years ago.

Things are often better the second time around and this is no exception.

"Shout The Mod Musical" continues at the Rochester Opera House this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with a final two shows Feb. 10 and 11.

The show is sponsored by Studley's Flower Gardens of Rochester and The Lebanon Voice.
