PORTLAND, Maine -  Central Maine Power President and CEO Sara Burns was scheduled today to join representatives from Senator Angus King’s office, the cities of Portland and South Portland, the American Lung Association of the Northeast and Nissan Corporation to unveil one of the first publicly available ‘DC Quick Chargers’ in the Greater Portland region.

Also present will be representatives from groups working with CMP on its Plug-In Electric Vehicle (PEV) Grant Program, the Conservation Law Foundation, Environment Northeast, GridSolar, Natural Resources Council of Maine, and Revision Energy. Municipal officials from Portland and South Portland were also to attend.

Additionally, many grant recipients and vehicles they have leased and purchased through the CMP program will be there. The ribbon cutting will be followed by a “Ride and Drive” event.

The event was to take place at the South Portland Community Center, 21 Nelson Road, South Portland.

Two new DC Quick Chargers are being put into service this summer - one at the South Portland Community Center, the other at the Fore Street Parking Garage. DC Quick Chargers can charge an electric vehicle from 0 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes, which makes them ideal for public applications.

CMP’s PEV Grant Program is designed to encourage the use of plug-in hybrid and electric cars in Maine, while gathering data about their use. The utility and its program partners are working to create public-private partnerships to get more PEVs on the road and to promote the installation of charging stations in the Greater Portland area.
