ROCHESTER -- A man was seriously injured in a one-car crash near the intersection of Highland and Portland streets in East Rochester on Friday, leading to a chaotic rescue mission when swarms of bees disturbed by the crash attacked first responders.

The unidentified victim was Medflighted to Maine Medical Center in Portland after emergency personnel were able to extricate him from the vehicle despite being repeatedly stung.

The extent of the man's injuries were not disclosed.

Police responded around noon and found that a maroon 2002 Buick Century with New Hampshire plates had veered off of Highland Street and into woods across from the East Side Barber Shop.

The Buick sustained significant damage to the front and was towed.

Police say the man was traveling east into Lebanon when the accident occurred.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
