ROCHESTER - When Rochester Police look to quantify and target specific crime areas in the city for uniformed patrols they rely on a software program maintained by Bair Analytics.

Rochester residents, anyone for that matter, can do the same by going to the Rochester Police Department website at rochesterpd.org and clicking on the "Crime Maps" menu item on the left-side toolbar.

Once you're there you can select from states and cities that use the Bair program. Rochester is one of three police departments in the state that currently use the system. In Maine, some 11 cities and towns use Bair.

Rochester Police get a little extra help, however, as Bair Analytics also furnishes the department with a full-time crime analyst.

"We have a Bair analyst who gives us updated weekly maps that we can use to target uniform patrol for proactive policing," Rochester Police Capt. Gary Boudreau said recently. "Much of it has to do with drug activity which is the root of what causes a lot of property crimes."

The analyst works full time at Rochester Police headquarters, but is paid by Bair. The city pays about $70,000 a year for the service, which includes the analyst.

Once on the page different icons signify different types of crimes, from assaults to burglary of a person to residential burglaries. The street is given but not the exact address.

Visitors can also view sex offenders listed in the area.

The service may be a little underutilized by the public, however. As of last week only 66 people had signed up for crime alerts available through the website, and since January only 698 views had been recorded.

Raidsonline is the platform for Bair Analytics. Check it out at http://raidsonline.com.
